Charlie Villanueva Promises To Work Hard for Detroit Pistons This Season

The 2008-09 Detroit Pistons were not very good. They won just 39 games, but still qualified for the eighth spot in the playoffs in the then-woeful Eastern Conference. It was the first losing season the Pistons had suffered since the 2000-01 season.

Changes were clearly necessary, so GM Joe Dumars made a couple of big-money additions to the roster.

Former UConn star guard, Ben Gordon was signed away from the Chicago Bulls with a five-year, 55 million dollar contract. Continuing the plan to horde as many UConn players as possible (Richard Hamilton was already in place), Dumars next signed forward Charlie Villanueva away from the Milwaukee Bucks with a five-year, $35 million deal.

What could go wrong when you have three players with championship rings from their days at the University of Connecticut?

Plenty, it turns out.

The Pistons were positively horrid last season, winning just 27 games.

Ben Gordon had career lows in points and three-point shooting percentage. Charlie Villanueva had a career low for rebounding, and contributed just 12 points per game.
