As names were flying onto the waiver wire on Tuesday, a fairly significant trade went down that could impact two divisional races.
The Vancouver Canucks traded veteran Shane O'Brien to the Nashville Predators in a package deal that sent Ryan Parent back to Vancouver; Parent was subsequently placed on waivers.
Vancouver made the deal to create space under the salary cap before the NHL deadline of 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday. If Parent clears waivers, he will be moved to the AHL and the Canucks will have a younger defenseman with Stanley Cup Finals experience available if needed.
For Nashville, this deal essentially closes the book on the summer travels of Dan Hamhuis.
The Predators dealt the rights to Hamhuis to Philadelphia for Parent before the NHL Draft, but Philadelphia was not able to come to an agreement on a deal with him. The Flyers then traded his rights to Pittsburgh for a draft pick, but the Penguins were also unsuccessful in negotiating with Hamhuis. The veteran defenseman eventually signed with the Canucks.
