In his first season as coach of the Ottawa Senators, Paul MacLean has proven that several NHL teams wrongly overlooked him as a top mentor. With his club sitting in seventh-place in the Eastern Conference, the rookie coach is a viable candidate for the Jack Adams Award.
After spending nine seasons as an assistant under Mike Babcock in Anaheim and Detroit, MacLean has a habit of winning wherever he goes.
We caught up and spoke with MacLean on the following issues:
* WAITING FOR AN NHL HEAD COACHING JOB:
There are only 30 head coaching jobs and I’ve been patient in waiting for my opportunity. At this point in time, I’m ready to coach at the NHL level.
If I would have gotten this opportunity earlier in my career, I might not have hung on to it.
Now I feel comfortable with what’s going on. Anyone who aspires to do this job must remember that there are only 30 of them, making it difficult to qualify.
