Beginning in 1998, the NHL has allowed its players to represent their countries in the Winter Olympic Games. Though controversial to this day, there is no doubt that this honor has provided players with the unique opportunity to showcase their skills on the world's biggest stage and skate with the hopes of an entire country on their backs. Most players will tell you that winning a gold medal and winning a Stanley Cup are wholly different, but equally desired accomplishments. Players take tremendous pride in being given the opportunity to play for their country. With that pride comes the hope of victory and the agony of defeat.
