Dirk Nowitzki Used to Sing at the Charity Stripe, Cites ‘Mr. Jones’ as Go-to Jam

In his younger days, Dirk Nowitzki was apparently big on singing at the free-throw line.

His jam of choice? “Mr. Jones” by the Counting Crows.

The Dallas Mavericks legend was on a radio show called Awesome Boring back in July, and he told hosts Adam Davidson of the New York Times and film director/producer Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights and Step Brothers) about a nifty mental trick he learned.

One of Nowitzki’s coaches thought he was too tense at the charity stripe, so he suggested singing a song as a means of loosening the big German up.

"I looked at him like he was out of his mind," Nowitzki said. But the 7-footer eventually gave it a shot, and it worked like a charm. The 37-year-old added that he doesn't really sing anymore, but his go-to tune back in the day was a peculiar one.

"Counting Crows' 'Mr. Jones,'" the power forward said with little hesitation. "I don’t know why that song, but I loved that song. I still love that song. That song could just always clear my mind."
