When LeBron James left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat, it was easy to see the enormous hole he left at small forward.
However, an even bigger need developed for Cleveland this past offseason—one that flew under the radar too easily.
With the departure of centers Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Shaquille O’Neal, Cavs forward Anderson Varejao was the only player left on the roster who could productively play the position.
Cleveland tried to improve their depth chart by acquiring center Ryan Hollins with guard Ramon Sessions from the Minnesota Timberwolves, but Hollins has not been the player they thought they were getting—leaving the Cavs thin in the post after losing Varejao for the year with a torn tendon.
However, even before Varejao’s injury, it was apparent Cleveland desperately needed to obtain a true center.
