Detroit Pizza Man Makes Offer To Buy Pistons

Detroit's famous pizza man Mike Ilitch (pictured celebrating with the '02 NHL Champion Detroit Red Wings) and his family own two of Detroit's four major sports teams. However, since his acquisition of the Detroit Tigers in 1993 the checkbook has been put away. If recent news is any indication, the dust will be blown off and another check is on the way.

In an article in the Detroit Free Press, Ilitch confirmed that he and his wife Marian would be making a bid to purchase the Detroit Pistons and the Palace Sports & Entertainment group. The purchase would also likely move the team from their Auburn Hills location to a downtown Detroit arena.

Ilitch has had mixed results with the Tigers and Red Wings during his current tenure as owner. Acquired by Ilitch in 1982, the Detroit Red Wings' previous championship came 28 years prior. Since then the Red Wings have won four Stanley Cup Titles, including back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998.

The Detroit Tigers haven't been as lucky. After Ilitch bought the team in 1992, Tigers' fans endured 12 losing seasons in a 13-year span. Until the 2006 season, the Tigers last visit to the World Series ...
