While working out at the gym today, I happened to catch a glimpse of ESPN's bottom line. Scrolling across in bright red capital letters, a gut wrenching statement read, "BREAKING NEWS: Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry has resigned."
A million thoughts immediately raced through my head, faster than the leaking of oil in the ocean.
Why would Ferry choose to end his five year GM tenure with the Cavaliers when the team was heading in the direction of re-signing LeBron James, bringing in some new talent to surround the MVP, and aiming straight towards the organization's first championship title?
As an NBA fan who believed from the get-go that James will re-sign with Cleveland, I perceived this move as a curve-ball.
Although Ferry had entered the final month of his contract, why would the team want to let go of arguably the most valuable piece to this organization, other than King James?
When it was evident that James needed a better supporting cast, Ferry took care of the job.
In 2008, Ferry acquired point-guard Mo Williams, a move that helped guide the Cavaliers to their first ever 66-win season.
