Minnesota Timberwolves team president and head coach Flip Saunders was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma eight weeks ago and has been undergoing treatment since that time.
The team released the following statement Tuesday:
Saunders thanked fans for their support later in the day:
Saunders returned to Minnesota as the head coach in 2014-15 after first coaching the squad from 1995 to 2005. He's also had coaching stints with the Detroit Pistons (2005-08) and the Washington Wizards (2009-12). For his career, he has a 654-592 record and has reached the postseason 11 times.
In Minnesota, he has a young, exciting roster highlighted by last year's Rookie of the Year, Andrew Wiggins; the top overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, Karl-Anthony Towns; and point guard Ricky Rubio. Big things are expected for the future of the team, though in the present, the primary concern will be Saunders' health.
