How much is an iconic moment worth? In the case of Michael Jordan's final regular-season game with the Chicago Bulls, we have an answer: $173,240.
That's how much an unnamed person paid for the jersey at an auction Sunday, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell.
"No one who has been out of the game fewer than 15 years has had items sell for these kinds of prices," said Ken Goldin of Goldin Auctions. "Michael Jordan is the collectible equivalent of Babe Ruth."
The jersey is by far the priciest Jordan-related item sold at auction. Previously, the pair of shoes he wore during the infamous "flu game" sold for nearly $105,000.
What's remarkable about the jersey is that it's not the final time Jordan ever wore the white and red No. 23. He led the Bulls through the entire playoffs that season, culminating in his game-winning shot in Game 6 of the NBA Finals over Bryon Russell. Had that jersey sold for $173,240, given the story attached to it, it would have inherently held more value.
Instead, this just goes to show the power of the Jordan legacy nearly two decades after he last donned a Bulls uniform.
