The Philadelphia 76ers are on the verge of basketball purgatory.
They are in the midst of trying to rebuild while not actually trying to rebuild. They have a lot of good pieces, but some really bad contracts.
The Sixers have for the most part chosen to go against the grain and rebuild the old-fashioned way: Sign a high-priced free agent that doesn’t pan out, make the playoffs once, draft bad, miss the playoffs, get the second pick, draft bad and then overachieve in a bad conference and make the playoffs again.
Repeat cycle.
Elton Brand is virtually untradeable. He’s got an untouchable contract and he can’t seem to stay on the court long enough to earn that contract. Well, he could play his best 48 minutes a night and the contract would still be a stretch.
The Sixers need to make a deal that will get them a lot in return for the future, put them back in the lottery and allow them to start accumulating enough assets to be big players in the very near future.
