In the NBA, the strength of benches is one of the most overlooked parts of a team. Looking at the top-notch teams, almost all have excellent benches other than the Lakers, whose struggles this year can be traced back to their bench failures all year. The Magic have Marcin Gortat, Jason Williams, Brandon Bass, and Mickael Pietrus, the Celtics have Tony Allen, Rasheed Wallace, Michael Finley and Nate Robinson, and the Hawks have Jamal Crawford, Zaza Pachulia, and Jeff Teague. All three of those teams are in the top four teams in the conference. The fact is that the little 15 minutes that each bench player may play are shockingly important. Talented players off the bench are crucial in so many ways: they allow the starters to rest, keep scoring runs alive after the starters check out, and help stop scoring droughts with their change of pace. A solid bench is crucial for any championship contender, especially one with more veteran players.
