As we reviewed previously, there is no bad draft position in a standard snake-style fantasy basketball draft. Today we turn our attention to something that is equally important, yet often just as underrepresented: league configuration.
There are many ways to configure a league. You simply cannot go to the draft table unprepared, lest you put yourself at risk of losing the league before the season even begins. Leagues can customize a lot of factors, such as:
1. Scoring categories or point values
2. Rotisserie or head-to-head format
3. League size (i.e. number of teams)
4. Waiver wire rules
5. Daily vs. weekly lineups and / or scoring
6. Playoff configuration (in formats that use playoffs), including size, length of competition periods, tiebreakers, and much more
7. Type of draft (snake-style, auction, etc.)
8. Starting positions
It would simply be naive to assume you can print out a list of player rankings from some fantasy advice site and draft straight off the page. What happens if that ranking includes turnovers as a category and your league does not? How would you convert straight ranking lists into auction values ...
