With preseason hockey underway the Detroit Red Wings have young talent that could be a huge advantage to them down the road.
Cory Emmerton, 22, has been a player it seems people have not noticed.
Drafted by Detroit in the 2006 he spent his first full AHL season with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the '08-'09 season. Having collected 35 points (10-25) in 69 games, he snagged the title of 10th-highest total points for a rookie in franchise history.
Emmerton's style of play is similar to that of Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom. He plays the ice like Zetterberg and is a pest to goalies like Holmstrom.
Friday's preseason game against Chicago in a 3-2 victory, Emmerton showed the drive and the skill Wings fans like to see.
As a center he showed he can play all aspects of the game when he played defense for a shift. He was physical when he needed to be and he showed good puck control when he kept a play going while on his knees.
Players like Emmerton are what the Wings need for the future and while he will more than likely go back to Grand Rapids to continue to develop he will be a player ...
