According to the Boston Globe's Fluto Shinzawa, Boston Bruins winger Daniel Paille has signed with Ilves Tampere of the SM-liiga.
He will supplant defenseman Johnny Boychuk, who joined EC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria last month, as Boston's most recent globetrotter. Paille is the 12th Bruin to suit up in a European league.
He will join Bruins teammate Rich Peverley in the SM-liiga. Peverley has excelled playing for JYP Jyväskylä since last October, and has set the bar rather high for Paille with 18 points in 20 games.
The Bruins have a history with Ilves. Goaltender Tuukka Rask, who recently returned from a successful stint in the Czech Republic, spent three seasons with Ilves before joining the Providence Bruins in 2007.
Paille will join two other NHL players in Tampere. Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Anders Lindbäck and Philadelphia Flyers forward Maxime Talbot have played a combined 17 games for the club this fall.
Despite their NHL talent, Ilves rests at the very bottom of the SM-liiga standings. Paille should help to reverse the club's woeful record.
