After much speculation and multiple reports, the Philadelphia Flyers have re-signed centre Jeff Carter for $58 million over the next 11 seasons.
The deal comes with a cap hit of $5.27 million per season, starting next season.
The length of the contract is somewhat surprising, considering that the National Hockey League is trying to redefine the whole long-term contracts "problem." Earlier this year, the NHL rejected a 17-year contract, and reportedly investigated the lengthy contracts of Marc Savard, Roberto Luongo and Marian Hossa.
The Flyers now have Carter and captain Mike Richards, both centres, locked up for the next seven seasons to go along with 33-year-old centre Daniel Briere, who is signed through the 2014-2015 season.
The three have played in a combined 1,464 games, scoring 1,106 points (505 goals). The trio of Carter, Briere and Richards gives the team one of the best one-two-three punches in the NHL, one along the lines of their division rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
