Injury Bug Bites Detroit Red Wings Again: Kronwall Sidelined Four to Eight Weeks

Call him what you want, but Nick Kronwall is one of the better defense man in the NHL. Kronwall, off to another decent start with 13 points (5 goals, 8 assists) will now miss up to two months because of a dirty hit by Montreal player Georges Laraque.

The question now is what do the Red Wings do? They have already lost Johan Franzen (ACL tear), Valterri Filppula (broken wrist) and Jason Williams (broken leg). How deep is this Red Wings team?

Yes, they have points in eight of 10 games. Yes, seven of those eight games have been wins; but a team can only be so deep. Having already lost other big names to free agency, (mainly Conklin, Hossa, Kopecky, Samuelsson, and Hudler) this Red Wings team is going to be tested over the next month.

Detroit will be without Filppula for at least another month. Williams will be out for at least another month. Franzen is out for another three months. Adding defenseman Andreas Lilja (week-to-week with concussion syndromes) to that list and losing Kronwall looks bad for Detroit.

Nevertheless, Detroit has seen substantial growth among younger players such as Helm and Abdelkader so nothing is for certain.
