The New York Islanders scored with less than six minutes in the third and looked to be well on their way to handing the Vancouver Canucks their first loss in regulation since Dec. 5.
Unfortunately for the Islanders Kevin Bieksa scored just 34 seconds later and the Canucks went on to win the game in a shootout, 4-3.
The loss overshadowed a spectacular performance in net for 20-year-old Kevin Poulin. The rookie saved 48 of the 51 shots sent his way, and set an Islanders organization record for saves in a game by a rookie goalie.
The Islanders received a strong night from Blake Comeau, who had a goal and an assist. John Tavares also continued his hot streak with a power-play goal. Jack Hillen led the Islanders with a plus-two rating, and also scored the team's first goal.
Rob Schremp used his slow-motion-like attempt to score the Islanders' first shootout goal, but both PA Parenteau and John Tavares were stonewalled by ex-Islander draft pick Roberto Luongo.
Mason Raymond used a spin move to score the first goal of the shootout for the Canucks, who received the game-winner in the third round from Ryan Kesler.
