Jeremy Morin’s Birthday May Complicate Chicago Blackhawks’ Roster Plans

Without question, the star of the Chicago Blackhawks’ training camp so far has been young winger Jeremy Morin.

After a two-point night in Detroit, Morin has three points in two preseason games in which he has played against mostly NHL regulars from both the Lightning and Red Wings. His power play goal against Jimmy Howard was a great effort, and both of his assists (to Jonathan Toews on Wednesday and then Brandon Pirri on Friday) have been in traffic.

There are roster spots available on the Blackhawks, and the organization has given their young prospects a fairly simple goal: earn it. So far, if anyone has earned a spot on the NHL roster, it’s been Morin.

However, there’s a potential problem coming for the powers-that-be in the front office for the Hawks: Morin’s birthday may become an issue.

The NHL has different rules established for different areas from which talent could matriculate to the NHL level. If a player like Nick Leddy chooses to go to college, they can jump to the AHL at 18.
