Ron Wilson, head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday after practice that the Leafs have waived everybody's favourite whipping boy, Jeff Finger.
If he clears waivers by noon Wednesday, which is very likely due to his $3.5 million salary, Finger will be sent to Toronto's American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.
This is a move that probably surprised nobody. Finger was the odd man out on the Leafs this season, a team that was already carrying seven NHL defensemen.
The veteran defender was a healthy scratch for a good chunk of last year, and was likely on pace for a similar season in 2010-11.
“We’ve got seven guys better than him right now, and that’s what it came down to. And we’re not going to carry eight defenseman, we don’t even want to carry two extra forwards.” Wilson had to say about the situation. “If Fings (Finger) plays well, and somebody on our team isn’t, then we recall him. We’re not burying him or anything like that.”
