Defenseman Chris Phillips may have rejected the Senators' initial contract offer, but the Ottawa Sun reports the two sides are working towards a new deal.
Phillips, who can become an unrestricted free agent this summer, owns a no-movement clause and can dictate whether or not he'll be traded.
The Montreal Canadiens, who acquired defenseman Brent Sopel yesterday, are still believed to be the front-runners for Phillips, if he accepts a move.
Phillips, 32, is making $3.5 million this season.
Phillips has heard his name in trade talks at various points throughout his career, but he says the biggest difference this time around is that he owns the clause, in control of dictating whether he stays or goes.
Phillips acknowledges it has been a difficult few weeks as he weighs all the possible end games.
