Niklas Backstrom Injury: Updates on Wild Star’s Status

Already heavy underdogs against the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks, the No. 8 Minnesota Wild were dealt a critical blow before Tuesday night's Western Conference quarterfinals matchup—and in pregame warm-ups, no less.

According to NHL.com reporter Brian Hedger, Backstrom suffered a lower-body injury:

According to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom was injured prior to Tuesday night's contest going for a rebound and will sit out:



There is no word on the extent of Backstrom’s injury or whether he’ll be available as a backup on Tuesday or going forward. The video of the injury (embedded below) shows Backstrom going for a routine rebound attempt and instantly shaking off pain in his left leg. 



Though it’s unclear whether this injury will last past Game 1, it’s obvious Minnesota will want its top goalie back in net as soon as possible.
