Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for the Philadelphia Flyers, they do.
After losing starting goalie Michael Leighton for the season, general manager Paul Holmgren announced that leading scorer Jeff Carter will miss the rest of the regular season with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot.
Holmgren said he expects Carter to return for the playoffs—should the Orange 'n' Black qualify for the field of eight, which at this point looks highly unlikely.
Carter suffered the injury in the first period of Sunday night's 3-1 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers when he blocked a Clarke MacArthur shot.
For the Flyers, Carter's injury puts the stamp on their playoff hopes.
In reality, they are a long shot to make the postseason considering their lack of goaltending, and goal scoring. Unless Claude Giroux suddenly becomes Sidney Crosby, Philadelphia will miss the playoffs for only the second time since the 1993-94 season.
