Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun has reported that the Senators may trade 28-year-old defenseman Anton Volchenkov before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in July, and he listed the Rangers among the possible suitors.
This doesn’t necessarily sound like a great idea for the Rangers, as they would only be trading for the exclusive rights to negotiating with Volchenkov before July and he’s already turned down a five-year, $20 million offer.
The Rangers already have defensemen Wade Redden, Michal Rozsival, Matt Gilroy, and Michael Del Zotto under contract next year for a combined $15 million. They also have a pair of important restricted free agents in Marc Staal and Dan Girardi to resign. So this is not a move they can make until they make other plans.
So even though Garrioch might have heard a rumor that the Rangers would be interested in Volchenkov, right now it sounds like a long shot. We’ll let you know if we hear anything else about this.
