Best Potential 2016-17 NBA Trade Deadline Targets for LA Lakers

January 1st, 2017 by David Murphy No comments »
The young Los Angeles Lakers can be fun to watch and should only improve with time. But clawing their way back into playoff contention this season will be a tall order unless they upgrade the roster through a midseason trade. At issue especially is a lack of defensive fortitude and a perplexing tendency to hand away early leads. The dilemma is whether to sacrifice talent that's yet to reach full maturation—such as D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and rookie Brandon Ingram—in return for a possible quick-fix solution. Do the Lakers hang on to Russell and hope his recent knee issue doesn’t become a long-term concern? Or can they deal away a pricey veteran like Luol Deng?  There’s no shortage of questions, but there are also some potential trade targets out there worth considering.   Note that what follows is not a series of specific trade scenarios, but an examination entering the New Year of which trade targets from ...

January 1st, 2017 by Carol Schram No comments »
Auston Matthews was the overtime hero as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 in front of over 40,000 fans at Toronto's BMO Field in the 2017 Centennial Classic. The outdoor game, a celebration of the NHL's 100th anniversary, started slowly, with just one goal through the first two periods. The dam broke in the third, with the Leafs building a 4-1 lead before the Red Wings fought back to tie, scoring two goals in the last 1:46 of regulation with goaltender Jared Coreau on the bench for the extra attacker. Anthony Mantha was awarded the equalizer, his second goal of the game, with just 1.1 seconds left on the clock, forcing the three-on-three showdown and setting up Matthews' heroics. With his 19th and 20th goals of the season, Matthews has now wrested the rookie goal-scoring lead away from Patrik Laine.  Leo Komarov, Mitch Marner and Connor Brown also scored ...

January 1st, 2017 by Rob Goldberg No comments »
The Nashville Predators placed defenseman P.K. Subban on injured reserve Sunday with an upper-body injury, according to Brooks Bratten and Thomas Willis of the team's official website.  Doctors will re-evaluate Subban in two to three weeks to determine when he might get back on the ice. On Tuesday, Bratten noted that Subban is optimistic about the recovery timeline. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Dec. 31 that Subban's injury is thought to be a herniated disk. The 27-year-old came to Nashville this offseason in a trade for Shea Weber. Subban had spent the first six years in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens, going to two All-Star Games while winning the Norris Trophy in 2013 as the best defenseman in the league. He finished with at least 40 assists in each of the last three seasons, including 45 this past season. Only five players at his position set up more goals in 2015-16. The Canadiens surprisingly shipped the talented ...

Winter Classic 2017: Blackhawks vs. Blues, Jersey Photos, Ticket Info and More

January 1st, 2017 by Steve Silverman No comments »
The Chicago Blackhawks and the St. Louis Blues will command hockey's outdoor stage at Busch Stadium on Monday, if the weather cooperates. The St. Louis weather forecast for Monday looks dreary and rainy, and that would put a damper on the NHL's annual showcase regular-season event. If it rains long and hard enough throughout the event, which scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, the league might have to delay or postpone the game. Weather.com is forecasting scattered thunderstorms, and that could clearly have an impact on the start time of the game. No matter what time the game is played, this should be an intense battle between Central Division rivals who always manage to get up for each other and demonstrate their desire to win by playing with more than just a bit of nastiness. The Blackhawks sit in first place in the division with a 23-11-5 record, and they have performed fairly well on ...

Saturday NBA Roundup: There Is No Doubting Giannis Antetokounmpo as a Superstar

December 31st, 2016 by Josh Martin No comments »
Giannis Antetokounmpo has long been a nuisance as far as the Chicago Bulls are concerned. A year-and-a-half ago, he was ejected from the Milwaukee Bucks' Game 6 blowout playoff loss for tackling Mike Dunleavy into the courtside seats. Since then, the Greek Freak has morphed into a different type of terror—not just for the Bulls, but for the NBA at large. Antetokounmpo pulverized the Bulls in every which way during the Bucks' 116-96 blowout win at the United Center on New Year's Eve. There was the usual array of awe-inspiring slams, including one impossible alley-oop finish early in the third quarter: He got in on the act from outside, draining a three-pointer to beat the halftime buzzer and cut Milwaukee's deficit to two points. On the other end, Antetokounmpo gave the Bulls nightmares around the rim. He racked up a career-high seven blocks—five in the first half—and picked off a pair of passes. By the time ...

James Harden vs. Knicks: Stats, Highlights and Reaction

December 31st, 2016 by Adam Wells No comments »
Houston Rockets star James Harden ended 2016 with a historic bang, accounting for 53 points, 17 assists and 16 rebounds in a 129-122 victory over the New York Knicks.  Per ESPN Stats & Info, Harden's stat line is the first of its kind in NBA history: ESPN.com's Tom Haberstroh found a way to make Harden's already-impressive stat line look even better: Per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle, Harden also put his name alongside Wilt Chamberlain's in the record books: Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook has generated most of the NBA's individual headlines this season. He warrants them by virtue of accumulating 16 triple-doubles already, including another one on Saturday that he got in fewer than 20 minutes of game time. Yet Harden deserves a spotlight just as big as Westbrook's. After taking criticism for his style of play last season, the Beard has taken his game to a new level in his first season with ...
